Clemson University graduate jumps on 'Shark Tank' to promote product Kanga Kase Mate

These former college kids will soon be appearing on national television because of their penchant for cold beer.

A group of Clemson graduates pitch their invention, which started as a class project, on an episode of “Shark Tank.”

The former Clemson student has invented the Kanga Kase Mate, a koozie that fits the entire beverage case.

“They gave us great suggestions and great feedback,” Logan Lamans said of his experience on ABC's hit show in an interview with The State on Tuesday.

The episode of “Shark Tank” that will air on April 7 at 10 p.m. ET has already been filmed. Although Mr. Lamans could not reveal the results of his own company's experience on the show, he acknowledged that necessity, from Pickens, South Carolina, was the mother of Kanga's invention.

Lamans said he took a business course at Clemson University two years ago, and his goal was to create an invention that solved a problem faced by college students.

What problem did Lamans want to solve? He wanted to find a way to keep beer cold while tailgating.

Lamans said he and his friends (four of whom are now partners at Kanga) often end up tailgating and drinking hot beers before watching a Tigers football game. He said it happened often. They all had Yeti coolers that cost about $300, but none of them wanted him to carry them or the heavy bags of ice a mile to the pregame location.

So Lamans said he and his friends were going to buy a case of beer and take it with them, but it would get warm soon. And as the Kanga team says on their website, “Warm beer sucks!”

Then Lamans had a serendipitous moment.

“I saw someone filling a koozie with beer and thought, ‘Wow! “I thought, “You can take the beer out of something that keeps it cold and put it inside something to keep it cold,'' Lamans told The State.

And the seeds of what would become a case of beer's worth of koozies had been planted. Mr. Lamans admitted that his project received his B grade in class, but he and his friends were confident that they would actually manufacture and sell it.

The invention evolved from a prototype Kase Koozee in its first year, and with additional funding provided through a Kickstarter campaign, it was developed to the point where it keeps drinks cold for up to seven hours, even non-alcoholic beverages, Lamans said.

Lamans said the product is made from a “scuba foam” material and can be used for beer packs of 12 to 30 cans, much like traditional koozies do for single bottles. It is said that

Kanga Kase Mate is not a one-time, disposable product, and LaMance told The State Paper that his company has two patents pending. He also owns the copyright to the slogan “Cooler than Cooler.”

As far as he knows, his invention is unique.

I've seen a lot of other ideas for keeping beer cold, but none like this,” Lamans said. He majored in engineering before graduating with a degree in business administration, but discovered his entrepreneurial spirit after working and running a house painting business. First grade. “This all revolves around the use of cases and original packaging.”

When he and his partners found out they were going to be on “Shark Tank,” he said they overprepared and analyzed every previous episode of the show. He said he would like to see trends in the show's “Sharks” panel, which regularly includes Mark Cuban, Kevin O'Leary, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec, Lori Greiner and Barbara Corcoran.

“I was nervous, but now I'm really looking forward to it. I can't really remember what happened, so I'm looking forward to watching it too,” Lamans said. “I hope it’s fun, light-hearted and inspiring.”

Although he did not reveal the results of the show, Lamans said he left “Shark Tank” with three goals.

“The first step is to get out of your parents' basement. The second step is to get an office and treat it like a business. And it's time to make some serious money with it,” Lamans said. He told The State that Kanga is working on product deals with Anheuser-Busch, Wicked Weed Brewing, Flying Dog Brewery and other interested parties. “It’s a great fit in so many areas.”
