Reusable drink “Koozie'' saves oceans

Want to protect your hands from hot drinks while still looking cool (and eco-friendly)? For just $5, you can purchase a reusable drink koozie made entirely of oceanbound plastic.

Slippy, a new product from North Carolina-based company Freaker USA, aims to reduce the number of people using non-reusable cardboard coffee sleeves. “Each year, Americans use enough cardboard coffee sleeves to cover the state of Texas,” the company says in its Kickstarter campaign.

Each koozie is woven from yarn made from a single plastic bottle that was destined for the ocean. That means all plastic bottles used to make each Slippy were “collected within 30 miles of a beach or coastline in a country without a formal waste management system,” the company says. Creating a product made entirely from oceanbound plastic was a challenge. According to Freaker USA, there are some companies that make products using a mixture of oceanbound and recycled plastics, but very few companies make products using 100 percent oceanbound plastic. That's what it means.

As of November 3, more than 1,000 backers have pledged $34,000 to Freaker USA's Kickstarter, far exceeding the original goal of over $20,000. If you are interested, please support his campaign by November 22nd. Backers can choose from 25 Slippy designs for $5 each. A sole proprietor can buy his slippery koozie with a custom logo for over $500.
